The theory suggests that an upward-leaning economic forcast is reflected in upward-creeping hemlines, that then fall back down with recessions. At first, one imagines, it might be onto something, with shorter skirts in the Roaring Twenties followed by longer ones after the stock market crash in 1929–probably why the theory has persisted. However, if you trace the economy over the last century, the thesis falls apart. The picture is more complex with politics, pandemics, and social movements affecting the zeitgeist as well as economics. Recently, sales of business suits dropped by 25%. Although we have been drifting away from formal dress codes for years, the new normal of hybrid working may be the final nail in the coffin for the business suit. Yet, dressing up makes us feel good. Recently, the belle of the Met Gala ball, Billie Eilish, donned a blush Oscar de la Renta gown, which drowned her in an ocean of tulle. Elsewhere, copious tulle undoubtedley has dramatic impact. It was used to great effect by Killing Eve’s fabulously-clad villain, played by Jodie Comer, who wore a sugar pink trapeze dress designed by Molly Goddard. Lydia Caston examines and traces the origins of these exaggerated shapes. We get a glimpse of old-world Hollywood as Virginia Postrel muses on the quality of glamour, with its shifting form and eternal pull. No matter the genre, dresses tell stories: their messages can be read in novels, TV shows, red carpets, and films, where they cement characters and plot in our imagination. In this issue, we unpick embellishment; from the sequins and plumes that adorned glamorous women and fueled enormous industry, to the work of Des Midinettes of Paris. So, if you are lucky enough to recieve an invitation to a party this Christmas, put on your glad rags and have a ball!

Polly Leonard, Founder & Editor of Selvedge Magazine

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0325/6565/7733/products/selvedge-magazine-issue-103-34543542534376.png?v=1673318279
selvedge-magazine-issue-104
Selvedge Magazine - Issue 104 - Keeping Warm

January / February 2022

Published December 15, 2021

Thirty is hot, twenty is nice, ten is cold, and zero is ice. When the temperature drops, it is time to reach for your woollens – but which fibre is the warmest? Cashmere, yak, alpaca, llama, and camel are all warmer than sheep’s wool. These hollow protein fibres trap warm air, yet there is more to their complex cellular structure than warmth. Their structure allows them to felt and forms dense water and wind-resistant material that has protected mountain populations for millennia. These fibres are multifaceted with varying staple lengths and lustres to be considered. In this issue, we look to fibres originating in high altitudes around the world, where temperature fluctuations require special fibres. Karin Strom examines how four brands are capitalising on the precious yak fibre of the Himalayas. We marvel at Adrien Pope and Paola Anziché, who use these fibres to create unique, sensory artworks. In the Andes, we find an extraordinary collaboration that secured the livelihoods of artisans from five villages around the Sacred Valley in Peru during the pandemic. Also in Peru, we find a community street art project inspired by traditional textiles that is uplifting a community. We then meet Adriana Marina, an Argentina advocate for the wild guanaco, working to change the fashion industry paradigm across the Andes.

Unlike the ubiquitous sweatshirt, a hand-knitted sweater employs waste-free construction techniques, comes in an infinite range of textures and colours, and lends itself to renewal and repair. Helena teaches us how to knit a pair of Icelandic socks and we delve deep into the iconic knits of Ýr Jóhannsdóttir. It has undoubted ethical and aesthetic appeal. Derived from the flax plant, the second-most productive fibre crop, it is surpassed only by hemp. Linen flourishes organically, and in contrast to cotton, needs only rainwater to thrive, which fortunately is in abundance in the swath of land that stretches along the coast from Brittany in France through Flanders to Friesland in the Netherlands, where the crop is cultivated today. The processing of linen is also simple and can be undertaken domestically, as is demonstrated by several projects, described in Dr John Ennis’ article ‘The Good Seed on the Land’, that have successfully reintroduced linen cultivation across Europe. We are watching the weather with anticipation for just the right moment for the harvest to begin at the Linen Project in the Netherlands which will be live-streamed as a Slow TV experience. See the website for updates.

Linen has strong hollow fibres with almost no elasticity. Its ability to absorb 20% of its weight in moisture makes it an ideal summer fabric, but when this moisture evaporates, the fibres are prone to crease. This is a quality that has been exploited through the centuries by lacemakers in Flanders and the coiffes of Brittany, as well as contemporary artists like Mercedes Vincente, who relies on linen’s ability to hold a fold in her shell-inspired sculpture.

Linen lost favour in the late 20th century partly due to the perception that it was a high-maintenance fibre; yet, once formality was abandoned in favour of a more casual look, linen took off again. In this issue, we explore the work of makers who employ the relaxed quality of linen to great effect: recently deceased Alison Morton, who wove extraordinary-ordinary textiles, and Jackie Parsons is inspired by the Dutch masters’ uber-comfortable, informal domestic bliss.

The lustre and softness of linen make it an obvious choice for printers, seen in the contemporary stencilled work of Pauline Greuell in the Netherlands, as well as, in a tiny town near Italy’s northeastern coast, where the unique art of handmade, rust-printed textiles is still alive thanks to a piece of living history: a massive stone-and-wood mangle designed, in part, by Leonardo da Vinci.

As the mercury rises, our attention turns to the sun and we look at ‘The New Sun’, a body of work by Caroline McQuarrie, that explores what life might have been like for the women living with or alongside the miners in early-colonial Aotearoa New Zealand.

Finally, representations of ‘Solar Worship & Symbolism’ amongst Indian and Mexican communities by Sophie Vent show us the importance of the warmth of the sun in all our lives.
